1918. Set consisting of: 1. Original linocut plate, reinforced with a wooden plate and mounted on a thick wooden board. 22.5 x 17.8 cm. 2. Trial proof, which served as a reference for the printer to identify the packaged plate and was applied to the packaging paper. 3. Contemporary impression, pulled by hand on Japanese paper. Reference: Söhn 26908-2, Söhn 36103-5 (titled ‘Mann vor Stadtlandschaft’ [Man in front of cityscape]), Davis (The Robert Gore Rifkind Centre) 2085 and 2086
Typically, this linocut was always referred to as a ‘woodcut’ in contemporary references and later in reference literature. Only the reappearance of the original, very thin linoleum plate, which was reinforced with wood on both sides for printing, clearly identifies the work as a linocut. At the time of its creation, the plate was used twice for printing in magazines, namely: 1. Menschen. Monthly magazine for new art – recent literature – graphic art – music – criticism. 1st year, issue 7, 1918. Edited by Felix Stiemer. Editor-in-chief Heinar Schilling. Felix Stimer Verlag, Dresden. 2. Der Weg. Issue 3, March 1919. Edited by Walter Blume. Verlag Der Weg, Munich.
