Andy Warhol created this portrait of Wayne Gretzky, famed hockey player, in 1984. Though not a big sports fan himself, Andy Warhol was fascinated with the celebrity and idolization that surrounded famous sports stars like Gretzky. The print of 'The Great One' helped draw attention to the Canadian art market. True to his pop art style, Warhol used vibrant colors and his signature color blocking technique when created this print. The use of warm red and orange colors over a deep blue background gives Gretzky an illuminating appearance. Warhol once that Wayne Gretzky was “more than a hockey player… he’s an entertainer.”
