"On the evening of January 8, 1927, on a crowded Parisian boulevard, Picasso encountered the woman who would become his muse and lover for the next decade, Marie-Thérèse Walter. He greeted her with the famous line 'Mademoiselle, you have an interesting face. I would like to make your portrait', and adding presciently: 'I sense we will do great things together'. So many works were made in celebration of her charms that it has been said that Picasso's creative output between 1927 and 1937 was a decade-long lyrical poem to Marie-Thérèse. This was published by Picasso’s friend Andre Level to go with a book entitled “Picasso” from a series entitled “Cahiers d’aujourdhui” and this was once of the earliest monographs on Picasso. The book provides a wealth of detail about the artist together with numerous illustrations of his works.
In 1928 Andre Level, an old friend of the artists’s, published “Picasso” as part of a series of books entitled “Cahiers d’oujourd hui” put out by Editions G Cres et Cie and this was one of the first monographs on Picasso. The book gave many biographical details of the artist and thisbeautiful lithograph, “Visage” was included in the book. An original copy of the book is sold with the work.
Provenance:
1) Former Andre Level (The Publishers) collection. A note in Baer describes how Level, wrote to Picasso on the 3rd November 1928, saying that he had just received the lithograph and expressed his gratitude and admiration is sumptuous praise. Possibly this letter refers to this work.
2) Private Collection Paris (By decent).
