This original woodcut belongs to Poèmes, Marc Chagall’s luminous and introspective 1968 artist’s book, where image and verse flow together in lyrical harmony. In this body of work, Chagall turned inward, illustrating his own poetry with deeply personal and imaginative visuals—each print a delicate interplay of memory, mysticism, and romantic reverie.
Executed with remarkable finesse, these woodcuts were printed by the legendary Atelier Lacourière et Frélaut in Paris, whose collaboration with Chagall brought exceptional depth and clarity to each line and texture. The project was published by Cramer Éditeur in Geneva, a longtime friend and publisher of Chagall’s illustrated books.
